Free Safety Incident Rate Calculator
A free calculator for the four common injury rates: TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate), DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred), LTIR (Lost-Time Incident Rate) and LTIFR (Lost-Time Injury Frequency Rate). You enter your case counts and total hours worked for the year.
TRIR, DART and LTIR use the standard OSHA incidence-rate formula: (number of cases × 200,000) ÷ total hours worked. 200,000 is the hours 100 full-time employees work in a year, so each rate reads as cases per 100 workers per year. LTIFR is not an OSHA metric. By convention it is (cases with days away × 1,000,000) ÷ total hours worked. The page also compares your TRIR with illustrative industry averages. Those figures are approximate, so pull the current rate for your NAICS code from the BLS Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities data.
How to use it
- Enter your OSHA recordable cases for the year.
- Enter your DART cases (days away, restricted work or job transfer).
- Enter the cases with days away from work. This drives LTIR and LTIFR.
- Enter total hours worked by all employees, or estimate them from headcount, hours per week and weeks worked.
- Read TRIR, DART, LTIR and LTIFR, and the TRIR comparison table.
